Linda Sawyer, Registered Nurse from AmericaMy name is Linda Sawyer and I have been a RN for over 24 years; all spent in Colorado, USA. I spent many years daydreaming and pondering about living overseas as a nurse. This past January 2006, my personal ponderings were realized when my family and I left our comfort zones for New Zealand. We are spending 6 months on one grand Overseas Experience (OE) as an entire family.
However, reality “kicks in” when bringing a family along, so I knew that I needed to contribute income for our grand OE adventure. So I contacted Prudence Shaw at Accent. Prudence was patient with my endless questions about nursing in NZ as well as what it might mean to bring the “entire family.” Prudence and I spent countless hours emailing, in addition to the occasional phone call. She even helped with the myriad immigration issues that accompany short-term work for overseas health professionals like myself.
I have now been working at the Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board since February 7, 2006. I work as a “casual” nurse at two different hospitals for the DHB – Alexandra Hospital (a psycho-geriatric hospital) and the larger Nelson Public Hospital.
Working in a “casual” position has given me the ability to travel around the South Island and also absorb everything I can about beautiful NZ!
