My New Zealand locum experience began when I found the Accent website. Within 30 minutes of registering online, I received a phone call from Prudence. We discussed my preferences and soon I had two applications for locum O&G positions. From there, I chose to pursue one of these in suburban Wellington. Throughout the application process, Prudence kept in touch with me as she maintained contact with the hospital. Thanks to her negotiating skills, she was instrumental in getting a higher than normal pay grade for me. At times I thought that I must be her only client because we corresponded so often.

After negotiating the morass of paperwork required by the Medical Council and the Immigration Department, at last we arrived in New Zealand and began our six-month odyssey. Since we were located near the geographic center of the country, it was the perfect jumping off point for exploration of both islands. The numerous public holidays supplemented our generous (by American standards) holiday allowances, and we were able to take frequent long weekend trips for sightseeing.

It was not difficult to adapt to the New Zealand lifestyle. Oh, the lamb and the wine! Not to mention the fish and the fresh veggies. My wife had no trouble finding tennis partners and companions to take advantage of the sights and the shopping in Wellington. Although she was reluctant to drive on the "wrong" side of the road, she found public transportation easy to navigate. After our return home to America, she complained that she must have left her "heat shield" in New Zealand because she was having problems with "re-entry" to the crowds and the traffic of Atlanta.

We are looking forward to another New Zealand experience, and Prudence has already begun investigating for us.
