Donald McKee, Emergency Physician from Florida, AmericaMy family (wife, children ages 14 and 12) and I are from Florida. Last (northern) spring we began thinking of spending a year in NZ as the kids were both due to change schools. The first step was to join one of the NZ chat sites. I asked members if anyone had ideas about work in NZ and was referred to Prudence Shaw.
I contacted Accent and things moved quickly from there. She walked us through the process during several phone calls (at all hours of the night for her) with respect to both work and living. Any information she did not have, for example about schools in different cities, she would find and later provide to us. With her help we were able to identify a couple of areas in NZ where we thought we'd be happy for the year. Next she came up with leads at several hospitals there and I accepted an offer from the first place I interviewed (by telephone), Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth.
As Prudence told us in our first conversation, our getting to NZ required three things, a job offer, registration with the Medical Council, and a work visa. Once I had the job offer, Prudence helped guide my registration application through the Council and kept up with the hospital's end of the application as well. Finally, with the offer and provisional registration Prudence provided the visa forms that we sent off to Washington. The total time from contacting Prudence until obtaining the job, registration and visas took less than two months.
I had never used a recruiter or agency to find work, before Prudence and Accent, but neither had I ever worked outside the US. Prudence's help as a resource on NZ and our representative in NZ was invaluable. When we first thought of NZ I also contacted some of the international employment agencies that advertised in trade magazines. I am glad we decided to work with Prudence instead, though, because the bigger agencies seemed to require giving up a lot of our control over the process.
I honestly cannot think of any negative aspect of enlisting Accent's help to find work in NZ. As for NZ itself, my family and I are completely happy here. We have decided to stay, with summer holidays in Florida, and we are presently applying for permanent residency. If anyone reading this is contemplating coming to work in NZ, I give my highest recommendation both to Prudence and Accent, and to Taranaki for you to consider in making your plans.

I met Prudence Shaw at the work in NZ expo in 2003 - I had a very quick chat with her and then arranged to come up to London for an individual interview. She videoed my interview (which was a bit scary) but it did not hurt! ... MORE |
