Trevor Crofts - Consultant General Surgeon from UKMy name is Trevor Crofts. I am a consultant General Surgeon. I am, what they call in NZ, a golden oldie (as I found out at Auckland bus station when buying a cheap ticket to Whangerai). I retired from the NHS in Edinburgh in June 2007 after 15 great years working in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Almost immediately after retirement I elected to go and work in Malawi for approximately one year. This was a challenging but rewarding job but very under resourced.
Upon my return home to the UK I was determined to spend time in my allotment and sailing my boat, but as winter approached, I was getting to the point when I felt the urge to travel and work again.
Fortuitously, one morning, on my emails, there was a mail shot from Accent health care requesting applicants to work in NZ. I thought it was worth a shot to escape the Scottish winter, and so I replied. A preliminary interview was soon arranged in London and the basic mutually useful information sought and given. Thereafter everything was done through meticulous networking over the internet and numerous faxes.
At every turn the communication with Prudence and her team at Accent Healthcare was superb. Rarely a day passed without some further assessment of progress or offer of guidance. Such was the efficiency of the organisation that all arrangements were satisfied within a three month period and here I am, in NZ, enjoying a wonderful locum position with supportive colleagues in a very pleasant Whangerai hospital in Northlands.
Arrangements are in hand for Franny my wife to join me for a month in February so that we can together see more of this beautiful country.
My working environment is pleasant. the working standards very similar to those in Europe and the IT systems , in this hospital at least, far superior to any I have experienced in the past.
My day consists of, up at 0600 hrs, off to the hospital gym for 30 mins followed by 30mins in the pool and work starts at 7.30 precisely. Good food in the canteen and the Health Board have kindly furnished me with temporary accommodation in a very pleasant motel with all mod cons as well as giving me the use of a hospital car.
This whole episode has been a pleasant and joyful and fulfilling experience.....and all because I looked at that email from Accent Healthcare.
