Fiona Kirk, Optometrist from IrelandHi my name is Fiona, I am a UK trained Optometrist from Ireland. I met Prudence Shaw at the work in NZ expo in 2003 - I had a very quick chat with her and then arranged to come up to London for an individual interview. She videoed my interview (which was a bit scary) but it did not hurt! She asked and answered loads of questions about me and working in New Zealand and when she returned to NZ we kept in email contact. In the meantime I got my registration organized, and learnt a lot more about NZ and where I was planning to work for one year. After a few weeks she called me to say that one of her clients had seen the video, my CV and the reference reports and they wanted to talk to me on the phone.
It was very odd having a phone interview as you could not see what the other person thought and they have seen you on the video! We exchanged a lot of emails, and I learnt a lot more about the job and what it entailed. Another week went by and Prudence called me to say that I was offered the job! I could not believe it all happened so quickly - the process took around 8 weeks. When I arrived Prudence picked me up from the airport and took me to accommodation which she arranged for me. It was hard work when I first arrived - I had a bit of trouble sorting out the phones etc. I am loving being out here - I do miss my family - but my boss has given me a bit of extra leave and I am going to go home for Easter. The outdoors life is great - I arrive in winter and I did feel the cold - the houses here are not as efficiently heated! But now it is warm.
The work is really good in regards to patient care and the time that we are able to spend with them, I attended a gonoscopy clinic last week to learn more about that and certainly there are more opportunities and challenges to be had.
