Tairawhiti is the Maori name for the Gisborne district, which encompasses an area of the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. The main Gisborne hospital managed by the Tairawhiti District Health Board provides health and disability services from above Hicks Bay in the north to the Whanauora Ranges in the south. The Gisborne district has a population of about 45,000, with about 30,000 people living in the city itself.
