Otago is a region in the south of New Zealand's South Island and is the country's second largest region with a population of roughly 203,500 people. In this rural region, the inhabitants are spread out over the principal city, Dunedin (about 70% of the population served by the Otago District Health Board) and towns such as Queenstown, Oamaru, Balclutha, Alexandra and Wanaka.
Health services in Otago are provided by public hospitals and other independent service providers (e.g. rural trusts, general practitioners, pharmacists, aged care and mental health community service providers. The Otago DHB employs about 2,500 staff and operates two hospitals: one in Dunedin and the other in Wakari.

Living in Otago
Weather conditions are very different across Otago, but broadly speaking coastal areas experience alternate warm and dry and wet weather patterns and the interior, experiences a more continental climate (cold frosty winters are succeeded by hot dry summers). The climate explains why Otago is one of the most successful wine growing regions in the country, particularly known for its excellent Pinot Noir.
Otago is also home to the popular tourist towns of Queenstown (the so-called 'Adventure Capital of New Zealand') and Wanaka. In these well-known areas, visitors and locals alike can enjoy a wide variety of attractions and activities including:
