Living in Southland
Southland was put firmly on the map of many people's consciousness with the release of the movie, The World's Fastest Indian, as it is the home of land speed record holder, Burt Monro. The sweeping vistas of vast skies, wild beaches, coastal forests and green rural landscapes are unmistakable. Some of the highlights of the region include:
- Stewart Island - Wonderfully remote hiking and walking for the well-prepared.
- Bluff - The jumping off point for Stewart Island is famous for its delicious oysters.
- The Catlins - Hidden waterfalls and river valleys, rocky coastal bays, inlets and estuaries.
- Trout fishing - Gore is the brown trout fishing centre of Southland and the Mataura River has the highest catch rate of any river in New Zealand.
