Serving a population of almost half a million people, the Waitemata District Health Board is the largest of New Zealand's DHBs. Employing over 5,500 staff, it provides and funds health and disability services for people living in North Shore City, Waitakere City and the Rodney District. Primary health care (GPs, nurses and pharmacists) provides services such as those listed below, where the DHB provides mainly secondary health care.
Waitemata Primary Health Care services include:
- Health keeping and preventive services, including health education and counselling
- Disease prevention and screening
- Foot health and oral health
- General wellness as well as diagnosis and treatment of health problems and disease.
District Health Board services include:
- Medical, surgical, obstetric, assessment
- Treatment and rehabilitation (for older people)
- Mental health, community and disability services
- Child disability, forensic psychiatric services
- School dental services and alcohol and drug services.
