The West Coast of New Zealand's South Island is one of the most remote regions in the country, known for its sparsely populated rural communities. Its healthcare services, including primary care, are provided by the West Coast District Health Board in Buller, Grey and South Westland districts.
It operates Grey Base Hospital in Greymouth, plus a number of health clinics in Westport, Reefton and Hokitika, and provides the communities of Haast, Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Whataroa, Hari Hari, Moana, Reefton, Ngakawau and Karamea with rural nurse specialists.

Living on the West Coast
The West Coast stretches some 600km along the Tasman Sea and is known for its rugged, beautiful terrain - wild coastlines, rugged mountains and impenetrable rainforest. The region experiences very high annual rainfall due to the prevailing north-westerly wind pattern and the location of the Southern Alps. Its population hovers around 30,000 and the communities, 'The Coasters' are known for their friendliness.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the West Coast experienced a population explosion with the gold-rush years, but nowadays, visitors are attracted by scenic highlights such as:
- Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers - Guided glacier walks and more in this World Heritage Area.
- Pancake Rocks, Punakaiki - Marvellous limestone rock formations and blowholes.
- Heaphy Track - The longest of New Zealand's Great Walks.
