Southland has a population of just over 100,000. Good healthcare services are available, and facilities include both public and private hospitals in Invercargill and Gore. Southlands health care is mainly (but not only) provided by the Te Whatu Ora -Southern (formerly Southern District Health Board).
Primary health care is the first point of contact with the medical sector for most of the region and provides services such as: ambulances, after hour surgeries, child health, dentists, disability services, hospices, men's health, mental health, and women's health services (gynaecology and maternity).
